Sartorius Muscle


SHAPE

It is a narrow, long and ribbon like thin muscle.

 

ORIGIN AND INSERTION

Sartorius arises from ASIS (anterior superior iliac spine) and the upper part of the notch located inferior to ASIS. After traversing the whole length of thigh, it gets inserted to upper part of medial side of tibia near the tuberosity of tibia.

 

NERVE SUPPLY

Sartorius is innervated by the femoral nerve (L2, L3), the largest branch of lumbar plexus.

 

BLOOD SUPPLY

It is supplied by muscular branches of the femoral artery.

 

FUNCTIONS

Sartorius does not produce strong actions and acts synergistically with other muscles to play its role. Its functions involve two joints, the hip joint and knee joint. It causes the flexion of thigh at hip joint and flexion of leg at knee joint. In addition, it also abducts the thigh at hip joint. It assists in medial rotation of leg, when the leg is flexed.
