Egg Cytoplasm

Cytoplasm is a jelly like substance that is present in all the living animal cells. It is provided with basic nutrients required for the life of cell. It also contains waste material that are the product of cell metabolism. Cytoplasm of an egg cell is quite different from ordinary cells as it has a special function for the development of the fertilized egg. That is why it is denoted as egg yolk or ooplasm.

TYPES OF EGG YOLK :

Egg yolk is of two types on the basis of the material it contains:

Formative yolk is just like cytoplasm of the other living animal cells and contains organelles (parts of a cell) and enzymes, etc.
Nutritive yolk is a special substance which makes it different from other cells. It contains nutrition including fatty substance and proteinaceous material that is essential for the early stages of the developing embryo (fertilized egg). Afterwards, this yolk shrinks and is no more required because developing baby starts to gain nutrition from its mother’s blood and a link is formed between both of their circulatory systems.
