Radius


ANATOMICAL FEATURES

 

The radial bone (radius) has two ends and a shaft (body). The upper end is composed of a cylindrical head that articulates with ulna (other bone of the forearm) and humerus (bone in the arm). The body is compact. The lower end is quadrilateral in shape, articulating with ulna and two other bones of the wrist namely scaphoid and lunate bones. The distal end of radius forms a pointed protuberance known as the styloid process that can be palpated. Radius is connected with ulna along the length of its body through a membrane called the interosseous membrane.

 

ATTACHMENTS

 

The biceps muscle is attached to the radial tuberosity on the upper end of this bone. The supinator muscle, flexor digitorum superficialis muscle and flexor pollicis longus muscle are attached to upper third of the body of radius. Middle third gives attachment to the pronator teres muscle. The lower third attaches pronator quadratus muscle.

 

CLINICAL IMPORTANCE

 

Fracture of the distal end is more common.

  • Fracture and backwards displacement of the distal end is called Colles’ fracture.

  • Fracture of the distal end and its forwards displacement is called Smith’s fracture.
