Left Ventricle


ANATOMICAL FEATURES

The left ventricle receives oxygenated blood from the left atrium (another chamber). The blood passes the mitral valve as it’s pushed from the left atrium into the left ventricle. The left ventricle then pushes this blood into the aorta via the aortic valve.

Left ventricle is more muscular as compared to the right ventricle as the left ventricle has to pump the blood into the whole body. It also forms the apex of the heart.

 

FUNCTION

The left ventricle works as a pump for circulation of the blood in the whole body that has been oxygenated in the lungs. It first relaxes, so that it gets filled with blood (diastolic relaxation). It then contracts forcibly (systolic contraction) so that the blood is ejected out of the left ventricle and into the whole body.

 

VOLUME OF BLOOD PUMPED

The volume of blood pumped by a healthy heart of an adult at rest is around 5 liters/min. When doing a laborious job, it can rise to about 25 liters/min.
