Left Atrium

h4 dir="ltr">ANATOMICAL FEATURES

Left atrium is connected with the left ventricle through the mitral valve. It is separated from the right atria by the inter-atrial septum. Four pulmonary veins open in its posterior wall (two from right and two from left lung). The dimensions of the left atrium are as:

  • Diameter – 27 to 35 mm

  • Volume – 25 to 55 ml

In the fetus (developing baby in womb) the inter-atrial septum has a hole called the foramen ovale. This foramen closes at birth. If it does not close, the blood from the right atrium passes into the left atrium and bypasses the lungs causing severe problems.

BLOOD SUPPLY

Left circumflex coronary artery supplies the left atrium with oxygenated, nutrient rich blood. It is drained by the oblique vein of the left atrium.

FUNCTION

When the left atrium relaxes, it gets filled with blood coming from the lungs via the pulmonary veins. It then pumps the blood (during contraction) into the left ventricle.
