Tibial Arteries

ANTERIOR TIBIAL ARTERY

Anterior tibial artery supplies the anterior compartment of the leg and the upper part (dorsum) of the foot. It originates from the popliteal artery at the knee. It has the anterior tibial artery alongside it, in its course. It crosses the ankle joint anteriorly, where it becomes the dorsalis pedis artery.

The different branches of the anterior tibial artery are:

  • Anterior and posterior tibial recurrent arteries

  • Anterior medial and anterior lateral malleolar arteries

  • Dorsalis Pedis artery

  • Various muscular branches

POSTERIOR TIBIAL ARTERY

Posterior tibial artery supplies the posterior compartment of the leg and the lower part (plantar) of the foot. It has its origin from the popliteal artery and is accompanied by the posterior tibial vein.

Fibular artery is the main artery that arises from posterior tibial artery. It also gives rise to two other arteries namely medial and lateral plantar arteries.

Posterior tibial artery is often used for palpation behind the medial malleolus. It is also examined for peripheral vascular disease by the physician.
