Pulmonary Vein

ANATOMICAL FEATURES

The pulmonary veins arise from the hilum of the lung. Each lung giving rise to one superior and one inferior pulmonary vein. The veins are attached to the pericardium (heart sac). The pulmonary vein has pulmonary artery closely associated with it. The right pulmonary veins are found behind the superior vena cava and the right atrium. The left pulmonary veins pass the descending thoracic aorta from front.

FUNCTION

Pulmonary veins play an important role in the oxygenation of blood and respiration as they carry oxygenated blood from the alveoli of lungs to the left side of the heart.

CLINICAL IMPORTANCE

The pulmonary veins carry oxygenated blood to the heart as opposed to the other veins of the systemic circulation which carry deoxygenated blood.
