STRUCTURE AND POSITION

BLOOD SUPPLY AND LYMPHATICS

Ovary gets arterial blood via the Ovarian and Uterine Arteries. Venous blood gest drained into Ovarian Vein.

Each ovary drains its lymph into Paraaortic Lymph nodes.

NERVE SUPPLY

Each Ovary gets innervated by fibres from the Ovarian Plexus.

FUNCTION AND SIGNIFICANCE

  • Each of the ovary produces one egg every month. They do this on alternating turns.
  • Ovaries also produce female Hormones like Progesterone, Estrogen and Testosterone. They are important in female physiology and secondary sexual characteristics production.
  • Ovaries may be abnormally formed or absent in females.
  • Ovaries can get infected and diseased leading to hormonal imbalance.
  • Ovarian cysts are common in women which are formed by unruptured follicles. However if they increase in number they may cause improper functioning of other follicles.
