Muscles of the Leg Posterior

STRUCTURE :

Posterior compartment lies behind the Tibia, Fibula and their Interosseous Membrane. It is further divided into 2 parts, Superficial Compartment and Deep Compartment with muscles divided into both separately.

Muscles of Superficial Compartment are :

Muscles of the Deep Compartment are :

  •         Flexor Hallucis Longus
  •         Flexor Digitorum Longus
  •         Tibialis Posterior
  •         Popliteus

BLOOD SUPPLY :

Posterior Compartment Muscles are supplied by a common artery which is Posterior Tibial Artery. It run in Posterior Compartment and gives off Muscular Branches along its way which supply the aforementioned Muscles.

NERVE SUPPLY :

Posterior Compartment Muscles are innervated by Tibial Nerve. It runs between Superficial and Deep layers of the Muscles as a thick Cord.

ACTION :

Muscles of the Posterior Compartment are Plantar Flexor which means that they Flex the Foot towards its Plantar Side (lower side).
