Corpus Cavernosum

STRUCTURE AND POSITION

  • Corpus Cavernosum Penis is an expandable, erectile tissue. It has spongy appearance with cavities inside.
  • Corpus Cavernosum Penis starts at the Pubic Symphysis from Crura of Penis and terminates near the Glans on dorsal side of Penis in a blunt extremity.
  • Corpus Cavernosum Penis is covered by a tough sheath known as Tunica Albuginea.
  • Cavernosal Arteries run inside each Corpus Cavernosum Penis along their way.
  • Superficial vein is present in middle on dorsal aspect of penis and runs dorsal to the Corpora Cavernosa Penis.

FUNCTION

Main function of Corpus Cavernosum Penis is Erection of the Penis. During erection muscles of the vessels of the Penis relax. It allows increased blood flow into the Corpus Cavernosum Penis. Blood fills the spaces inside it and it expands considerably. Tunica Albuginea is tough enough to prevent venous outflow from superficial veins. Thus a pressurised expansion is developed which is sustained as long as vessels muscles are relaxed.
