Brachioradialis Muscle Posterior

ANATOMY

Brachioradialis Muscle originates from the two third upper portion of the Supracondylar Ridge, which is located at the lower end of Humerus. The muscle passes along the axial border of the forearm towards a tendon, which is inserted at the base of Styloid Process of Radius. Brachioradialis forms the lateral border of the Cubital Fossa. Passing down the Forearm it overlies the Radial Nerve and Radial Artery.

INNERVATION

Being visible from the anterior aspect of forearm, Brachioradialis is innervated by Radial Nerve C5 and C6 at Elbow joint. It receives direct input from the Radial Nerve.

BLOOD SUPPLY

Brachioradialis Muscle receives oxygenated blood through Radial Recurrent Artery which branches off the Radial Artery below the Elbow.

FUNCTION

The main function of the Brachioradialis Muscle is the flexion of Forearm at Elbow. It is capable of Pronation (rotational movement at Radioulnar joint) and Supination (when forearm faces front of body). It helps in the pronation of forearm when Supinated, and Supination when Pronated. The muscle helps stabilizing the Elbow during rapid flexion and extension like during Hammering.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Brachioradialis Muscle is prone to Myofascial Pain Syndrome. The pain is caused from repetitive microtrauma of muscle from activities like ironing for long time, repeated flexion of forearm at Elbow commonly during exercise, handshaking or digging with a trowel.
