It is one of the two branches of the dorsalis pedis artery, that arises on the dorsum of the foot, a little anterior and lateral to the lateral tarsal artery (also a branch of dorsalis pedis artery), opposite to the medial cuneiform bone. It runs laterally over the bases of the metatarsal bones, beneath the tendons of the extensor digitorum longus and extensor digitorum brevis muscles. It ends by anastomosing with the lateral tarsal and lateral plantar arteries.
It gives off 2nd, 3rd and 4th dorsal metatarsal arteries, each of which divides into dorsal digital branches for adjoining toes. The dorsal metatarsal arteries are joined by proximal and distal perforating arteries from the sole of the foot. It supplies the structures of the foot and toes with oxygen and nutrients rich blood.
