Itch



INTRODUCTION

Itching is an unpleasant sensation (tingling) that makes you want to scratch the affected area of skin. Itching may occur either on one specific area or it may be all over the body.

 

CAUSES

There are many causes of itching. Some of them cause generalized and other cause localized itching.

  • Allergy

  • Sunburn

  • Rashes

  • Pregnancy

  • Dry skin

  • Dermatitis

  • Reactions to medications

 

HOW TO AVOID?

For severe and persistent itching, one should consult a doctor.

Some interventions that can be observed at home are:

  • Avoid scratching.

  • Wear cool, dry and soft clothes.

  • Use moisturizers after bathing.

  • Apply cool packing on itchy area.

  • Try easily available antihistamines such as diphenhydramine.
