Right Ventricle

STRUCTURE AND POSITION :

  •         Right Ventricle is situated inferior to the Right Atrium. It extends to the Apex of the Heart.
  •         Right Ventricle is triangular in shape and is more muscular than the Right Atrium. Its muscular wall is thickest at its base and thinnest near the Apex.
  •         Right Ventricle is attached to the Left Ventricle with an interventricular Septum between them.
  •         Right Ventricle receives blood from Right Ventricle via a Tricuspid Valve (having three cusps). It is also connected to the Pulmonary Artery trunk via a Pulmonary Valve. Pulmonary valve allows flow of blood only from Ventricle towards Pulmonary Artery.
  •         Right Ventricle has a Diaphragmatic Surface at base and Sternocostal Surface anteriorly. Conus Arteriosus is the part where it forms a conical projection which is connected to the Pulmonary Artery.

FUNCTION :

Right Ventricle receives deoxygenated blood from the Right Atrium through a Tricuspid Valve. It then pumps it into the Pulmonary Artery and Pulmonary Circulation. This flow is guarded by the Pulmonary Valve. Blood gets oxygenated via the Pulmonary Circulation.
