Popliteal Lymph Nodes

ANATOMY

Popliteal Lymph Nodes are present in the legs near the Knees at the Popliteal Fossa. These Popliteal Lymph Nodes are present in two sets i.e.

  • Deep Popliteal Lymph Nodes, located near the Popliteal Vessels.

  • Superficial Popliteal Lymph Nodes are present in association with small Saphenous Veins (superficial vein of posterior leg).

The Efferent Lymph Nodes pass along the Femoral vessels to Deep Inguinal Glands (located medial to femoral vein under the Cribriform Fascia).

FUNCTION

Popliteal Lymph Nodes function as the lymphatic system of lower legs and feet. A fibrous outer capsule encapsulates the lymphatic tissues in the Popliteal Lymph node for filtering and balancing the blood supply to the lower regions of body.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The body tends to develop a swelling of the lymph nodes while fighting against an infection. This condition is known as Lymphadenitis resulting in swelling with mild pain. Swelling of Popliteal Lymph Nodes is not very common. Common methods for relieving inflammation and swelling of Popliteal Lymph Node includes:

  • Anti Inflammatory Medications

  • Rest

  • Elevation of Legs
