Pelvis Posterior

Bones of pelvis:

The ring shaped pelvis is formed by three main bones:

All these bones form a fibrous anterior junction known as the pubic symphysis that denotes the cartilaginous union of two sides anteriorly. When these are joined together, a cup shaped hollow cavity is formed for articulation with femur bone and it is known as acetabulum. Ilium is the largest of the three bones and contains a pronounced curved thick border known as iliac crest. Out of three, pubis is the smallest bone and it forms a pubic symphysis at the point it joins other bones by a fibrous tissue.

Difference between male and female pelvis:

The pelvis in males is generally different from those of men due to uterus and child bearing capacity. The pelvis in males is larger and pubic symphysis is deeper and longer. In females, the pelvis is delicate, shallow, less prominent and shorter.

Organs contained in pelvis:

Pelvis is the house for the reproductive organs and these organs are entirely present in the pelvic cavity. Many important organs such as urinary bladder, rectum are protected by it. Uterus in the non-pregnant women is also entirely present in pelvis.
