Laryngopharynx

LOCATION

Laryngopharynx is the region where both food and air pass. It is located behind the larynx (structure is the throat) extending from the epiglottis above to the cricoid cartilage below, becoming continuous with the esophagus.

NERVE SUPPLY

Laryngopharynx is supplied by the pharyngeal plexus.

FUNCTION

Laryngopharynx is lined by stratified squamous epithelium. It works as a conduit for the passage of food and air. During swallowing, the entry of air temporarily stops allowing the food to pass safely to the esophagus. This prevents the food from entering our respiratory tract and from choking the trachea (windpipe).
