Distal Phalanges

The distal phalanx of the foot is a bone found on all toes and the big toe of the foot. It is a small relatively flat bone of the toes underlying the nail bed (ungual area). When the word ungual is used to describe a body part it refers to the nail bed of the fingers or toes. Each distal phalanx of the foot bears a tuberosity on its distal plantar aspect. Connective tissue strands (skin ligaments) radiate through the pulp; the bases of the phalanges of the lateral four toes articulate proximally with the heads of the middle (intermediate) phalanges. The base of the distal phalanx of the great toe articulates with the proximal phalanx. The distal phalangeal bones are at the end of the proximal and middle phalangeal bones. They are right below the toenail at the end of each toe on the foot. There are differences that are distinct differences between the phalanges of the fingers and the toes. They are listed as follows:

  • The hand features a thumb which is structurally different than the other fingers.

  • The foot has a big toe which is structurally the same as the other toes.

  • Finger bones tend to be longer.

  • The toe bones tend to be flatter.

  • The distal phalanges (foot) provides a home for both the toenail and the fleshy pad on the underside of each toe.

Here is the way the foot is structured and how the distal phalanges relates to the placement of the bones that form the foot. Each bone has a body and two extremities which are the base and the head. The human ankle and foot bones include tarsals (ankle) metatarsals (middle bones) and phalanges (toes). The main parts of the foot anatomically include:

  • ankle

  • heel bone

  • instep ( range of bones at the inner part of the foot that forms the arch)

  • metatarsus

  • toe

The toes are made up of proximal, middle and distal phalangeal bones. Except for the great toe which has only proximal and distal phalangeal bones. There are 28 bones that make up phalanges of the toes which includes both feet. There are also 28 bones which make up the phalanges of the hands. This accounts for a total of 56 bones of the 306 bones found in the human adult body.
