Descending Colon

ANATOMY

At the upper left part of the Abdomen, the Descending Colon starts at the Splenic Flexure. It runs downwards through the left Hypochondrium (upper part of Abdomen interior to the lower ribs of Thorax) and Lumbar regions along the lateral side of the left Kidney and finishes at the lower left part of Abdomen where it continues as Sigmoid Colon. The two-third of it is Retroperitoneal (potential space between abdominal cavities behind Peritoneum). The rest has a short Mesentery.

BLOOD SUPPLY

The blood supply to the Descending Colon is comes through Left Colic Artery (branch of Inferior Mesenteric artery).

FUNCTION

The first part of large intestine is meant to absorb water and other substances from Chyme (semifluid mass of partially digested food); the main function then for the descending colon is to store the waste until they are excreted out of the body in solid form when a person has a bowel movement. Descending Colon gradually solidifies the stool as it moves along in it.

DISEASES

There are several diseases associated with the Descending Colon among which the most common are the Inflammatory Bowel diseases which are as follows.

Ulcerative Colon might affect any part of the Colon but while affecting the Descending Colon it is known as Left sided Colitis. Its presence is marked by the Inflammation and Ulcers on the lining of the large intestine. Symptoms of it are Diarrhea, Bleeding, Fever, Abdominal Pain, Appetite loss and Weight loss.

  • Crohn’s Disease

When a person suffers with Crohn’s disease or Crohn’s Colitis they have damage on intestine tissues resulting in the difficulty to absorb water and salt. Symptoms include abdominal pain, Diarrhea, Nausea, bleeding in stool, Weight loss and Fatigue. There is no proven cure for Crohn’s Disease however symptomatic treatment with antidiarrhoeals is common in less severe cases. Change in diet and lifestyle is also helpful as stress increases inflammatory process.

Descending Colon Cancer is most serious as it shows no symptoms in early stage. Some of the signs indicating the Colon Cancer are abrupt changes in bowel habits, bleeding from rectum, black stools, constipation and Mucous in stool.
