Common Iliac Vein


ORIGIN

The common iliac veins are formed by union of external and internal iliac veins, opposite the sacroiliac articulation at the inlet of the pelvis.

 

COURSE AND RELATIONS

The right common iliac vein firstly lies behind and then posterior side of the right common iliac artery.

The left common iliac vein runs a more oblique course, it lies on the medial side of the left common iliac artery, and then crosses beneath the right common iliac artery to join the right common iliac vein, in front of right side of the body of 5th lumbar vertebrae and form inferior vena cava. It is crossed by sigmoid colon and superior rectal vessels.

 

TRIBUTARIES

It receives blood from internal iliac vein and external iliac vein.

Internal iliac vein receives blood from reproductive organs, it may lie lateral to external iliac vein.

External iliac vein receive tributaries from network of plexus. Plexuses are located in the anus, prostate gland, and urinary bladder in males.

Plexuses are found in the vagina and uterus in females
