Axial Skeleton Skull

SKULL

The skull has 28 bones in total (including the bones of the inner ear). These bones are widely divided into two categories as given below:

Cranium is the group of bones that enclose and cover the brain. It protects the brain and forms its bony covering. It is composed of 8 flat bones that are attached to each other through the sutures (joints of cranial bones). The forehead is composed of frontal bone. The back side of the head is composed of the occipital bone that has foramen magnum (spinal cord passes through it) at its base. The temporal bone has the organs of hearing in it on both sides.

  • Facial bones

Facial bones are the bones of the face which are 14 in number. Nasal bones, two bones of the jaw and cheek bones make up the facial skeleton. All the bones, except the lower jaw are attached to the cranium through the sutures. The lower jaw (mandible) articulates with the temporal bone and has sockets for teeth.
